The War.
FIGHT AT SUBSIDE.
The Suonyside kopjes range north and south, and, leaving the natives guarded in order to prevent their divulging the movements of the British, Colonel Pilcher, of the Northumberlands, the Queenslanders under Major Ricardo, with 200 Canadians and two guns, a horse battery, and 40 mounted men, marched to within four miles of the kopjes. The Canadian guns were ordered to attack a laager at the foot of the northern spur, while Pilcher and the Queenslanders worked splendidly on the left, taking advantage of every cover Two shells, at 1,500 yards’ range, landed amongst the tents in the laager, and were the first intimation the enemy had of the presence of the British. The Boers hurriedly ascended and lined the kopjes, volleying hotly, but their fire was soon subdued. At 1000 yards’ range the Canadians shelled with wonderful accuracy, while Captain E. G. Gaunel’s company delivered a front attack which demoralised and routed the Boers, whose laager, with 40 prisoners, was captured, besides their dead and wounded. Lieut. A. G. Adie (Queensland), while patrolling before the attack, was severely wounded.
