THE FERRYMAN AND THE OWL.
At a certain ferry pretty far down the river Clyde the ferryman, taking 1 a stroll before retiring to rest after a somewhat festive evening, heard an owl hooting from a neighbouring crag. Supposing it was someone hailing the boat, he shouted —‘ Wass it the little boat or the big one she wass wanting ?’ The only reply was another prolonged hoot, ®n which the exasperated ferryman jelled —‘ If she’ll not spoke plain, she’ll not get any boat at all, whatever.’
