There is a fanny sbory of an aged Oldham operative who was called apon suddenly to attend a funeral. He hadn’t a clean shirt to go in, so his children persuaded him to put on the new-fangled ‘ dicky,’ or false front,, which they pointed out would be as good as a new shirt. He took the dicky, but after the funeral he said : ‘Aw bawt a dicky, but never no moor.’ ‘ Why, feyther, heaw’s that ?’ ‘ Starved to deeath !' ‘ Heaw war that, feyther ?’ Yo’ had a erood warm shirt on.’ ‘ Shirt on ! Yo’ said a dicky war as good as a shirt, so aw put no ehirt on.’
