The Southern Cross PUBLISHED WEEKLY. Invercargill, Saturday, Oct. 15. WATER SUPPLY.

The last meeting of the Invercargill Borough Council will be remembered in future by reason of the action taken regarding the water supply question. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Watson, seconded by Cr. Roche, that the Engineer .be asked to furnish information regarding the feasibility of bringing in water from the Oreti. The members of the Council have stood loyally by the existing supply, and the mover was careful to absolve from blame the municipal representatives responsible fpr the well as against the river supply scheme. It has, however, had ample trial, and has been found sadly wanting, In their heart of hearts everybody is ashamed of the whole concern. They realise that practically all they have got for their money is a handsome tower and the means of promptly extinguishing fires. The water, while not absolutely undrinkable, is far from being all that it should be, and the sooner a change is brought about the better. Cr. Watson estimates that a loan of £35,000 would mean an addition to, the rates of 6d in the pound. If so, it will be money well spent. The fact is the town cannot afford to be without an adequate supply of pure water—it is absolutely essential to the health of its citizens and to its progress as a centre. Let us hope that the next occupant of the mayoral chair will engineer the proposed scheme to a successful issue. It is certainly, as Cr. Roche put it, a step in the right direction.
