CHALLENGE SHIELD.
The third general meeting of delegates to the Southland Volunteer Challenge Trophy Association was held in the Oreti Rifles Orderly Room on Monday evening, there being present: Capt. McKenzie (in the chair), Lieut. Murphy, Lieut. Swindley (hon. treasurer), Col.-Sergeant Thomson, Sergt. Hawkins, Sergt. Wells, Corporal Colquhoun, Private Wakelin, and Lance-Corpl. Johnston (hon. sec.) Captain Hawkins, chairman of the Association, was absent, having to conduct an examination of recruits, but appeared before the meeting closed. The business transacted was of a routine nature, the same interest which has all along characterised the meetings being still manifested by members. The discussion on the “ ways and means ” report was continued, and it was unanimously decided that a military display and concert, as recommended by the sub-committee, be organised and carried out at a date to be fixed, the arranging of preliminaries being left in the hands of the same subcommittee in the meantime, and further and more definite arrangements being held over till next meeting, w hmh will probably be held on Monday, 24th inst. A somewhat unnecessary debate concerning the conditions, etc., to govern the shooting for the shield took place between several members, but dropped upon their being reminded that this matter was not yet open for discussion. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
