SOUTHLAND VOLUNTEER CHALLENGE TROPHY ASSOCIATION.
The second general meeting of delegates to this association was held in the City Guards’ Orderly Room, Garrison Hall, on Monday evening, there being present :—Lieut. Murphy (in the chair), and Priv. Wakelin, City Guards ; Capt. McKenzie, Sergt. L. Lennie, and Sergt. O’Toole, Oreti Rifles ; Col-Sergt. Thomson and Sergt. P. Thomson, Awarua Rifles; Sergt. Hawkins, Mounted Rifles ; and LanceCorpl. Johnston, Secretary. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Sergt-Major Wallace (Mounted Rifles). Letters were received from all the town corps signifying their intention of supporting the Association, and confirming the appointment of their delegates. The sub-committee appointed to draw up the Articles of Association and Rules, submitted a code which should govern the Association most satisfactorily, being most cmche and exhaustive. After being fully discussed, these rules were adopted almost in their entirety. The elestion af office-bearers for the ensuing year was next proceeded with, and it was unanimously agreed that Capt. Hawkins, Officer Commanding the Southland Volunteer District, be appointed chairman ; Lieut. Swindley, Honorary Treasurer; Lance-Corpl. Johnston, Honorary Secretary ; Capt. McKay and Sergt. Raymond, Auditors. The report of the subcommittee appointed to consider ways and means of raising the funds necessary for the purposes of the Association, was next considered, and proved most interesting, embodying some novel suggestions, and showing that the matter had received most careful consideration. This report was most favourably received by the Board of Management, and was partially adopted, several recommendations being left over for further deliberation. One of the schemes, a proposal to hold a grand military display and concert, will be further discussed on Monday evening, and will probably be adopted. Capt. McKenzie then reported on behalf of the sub-committee appointed to procure prices and designs for a challenge shield, and submitted a handsome design, executed by himself, which called forth much admiration. It was decided to adopt this design, and the matter of drawing up a specification and getting prices to lay befor the next meeting was left in the hands of Capt. MacKenzie, Lieut. Murphy, and the secretary. It was decided to hold over consideration of other business for a week, and to record on the minutes a hearty vote of thanks to the various Sub-committees for their excellent reports, with special appreciation of the design executed by Capt. MacKenzie for the challenge shield. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
