Bluff Notes.
On Monday a lad named James Sylvester met with a serious accident at Ocean Beach railway station. It seems that he fell, and was struck by the engine, which caused serious wounds to his head and leg. He was conveyed to the Southland Hospital. A meeting of the Carapbelltown Borough Council, held on Monday, 13th inst., was attended by the Hon. J. G. Ward (Mayor), and Crs. Heed, Lee, Fox and Metzger. A number of works were ordered to be attended to. A lease was accepted for a right-of-way to the foreshore. A special order was made adopting a new set of by-laws, to come into force on Ist August. The barque Ganymede arrived on Thursday with a cargo of guano.
On Wednesday evening the Bluff Volunteer Fire Brigade opened their new station and held their first social. A number of members of the Invercargill Central and Railway Brigades took part. A procession paraded the streets with reels, etc., and fireworks. On the return to the station the company sat down to an oyster sapper. The chair was occupied by Capt. Georgeson, who had on his right the Hon. J. G. Ward (Mayor), and Capt. Ferguson (Invercargill Railway Brigade), and on his left Lieut. Cook (Invercargill Central). After justice had been done to the good things, a number of toasts were disposed of. The ketch Gratitude returned from the Macquarrie Islands on Thursday. She experienced very severe weather at the Islands.
