BALFOUR.

The new town hall was opened on Friday, Jane 3rd., with a concert. Mr Grilfedder, M.H.R. for Wallace, in opening the hall, congratulated the Balfour people upon erecting such a fine building. The contract for the building was in the hands of Mr D. McLean, and he made a very good job of it.

The concert was fairly well patronised, and except that one or two of the performers on the programme failed to attend, everything went well. The accompaniments were played by Messrs Haydon, Dunne, and Messrs Edwards, Thomson, and Matheson, and the following ladies and gentlemen sang : —Misses Macpherson, Dunme, and Hayden, and Messrs Edwards, Matheson, Smith, Meek, Rasmussen, and several others whose names I did not get. The pupils of Mr Gr. Coi mack gave several violin selections in a masterly manner, and reflected great credit upon their tutor. After the concert • ended, the floor was cleared for dancing, which was kept up till about 4 a.m., the music being supplied by Messrs Cormack and Edwards, and some of the former’s pupils. Mr J. Mills occupied the chair at the concert, and carried out the duties well. Mr D. Mcpherson, junr., the Honorary Secretary to the ball company, also did his duty well. Mr Gilfedder addressed his Balfour constituterlts on Monday evening last, and at the close of the meeting received a unanimous vote of confidence. The farmers complain very much at the way the railway department have treated them in respect to grain trucks. An immense quantity of grain is waiting trucks at Balfour and Kingston crossing, and the only consolation the owners thereof have is that the weather is pretty good.
