FIGHTING WITHOUT DRINK.
Telegraphic reports on the 12th and 13th Feb- last, from Dekhish on the Nile, state that ‘ General Gatacre is working indefatigably to bring his brigade into the condition of a perfect fighting machine. Since he went into camp here no spirits, beer, or other intoxicants have been allowed in the regimental canteen, coffee palaces being kept continuously open instead. The men are now in magnificent condition, and in great spirits. They are as hard as nails, and in a recent desert march of fifteen miles, with manoeuvring instead of halts, the whole lasting for five continuous hours, not a single man fell out. Though the route lay over heavy desert sand, they covered the distance in less than six hours, and arrived in splendid condition.’
