The Reporter.

VICE-REGAI VISIT.

His Excellency the Governor arrived in Invercargill on Wednesday afternoon, and had a most enthusiastic reception. The station had been handsomely decorated by the railway employees, and the City Guards furnished a guard of honour ; the Garrison band was also in attendance. The platform was reserved for the reception committee, who, headed by His Worship the Mayor, welcomed Lord Ranfurly to the town. The band then played the National Anthem, and the Governor was afterwards driven to the rotunda, in a handsome four-in-hand, supplied by Messrs J. and R. Jopp. There he was presented with an address from the Borough Council, which was duly acknowledged. He was driven to Johnson’s Club hotel. The rotunda and many of the business places were decorated, and at night illuminations were carried out with good effect. In the evening His Excellency presented the certificates and medallions gained by members of the St. John Ambulance Association. On Thursday forenoon he laid the memorial stone at the new hospital buildings ; in the afternoon he opened the winter show in Zealandia Hall, and was entertained at a fruit social in the evening ; and on Friday he visited the schools, and attended a ball in the evening. From this it will be gathered that His Excellency crowded a good deal of sight-seeing, speaking, and work into his three days’ stay in Invercargill. A report of the principal events in which he took part is given in this issue.
