THE BATHS.

The establishment of public baths in town has ‘ caught on ’ with the public, and although the weather since the opening has been rather cold to make people long for a plunge the attendance has been very satisfactory, Mr Miller, the enterprising legsee, reports that the average daily attendance has been Ticketholders, 29 ; casuals, 10 ; school children, on free days, 110 boys, 49 girls. Thirtytwo yearly single tickets, four family tickets, and 17 single monthly tickets have been sold. Mr Miller has made application to the Council to put in the heating apparatus, and the question was favourably considered at the meeting on Thursday evening. The Engineer has been instructed to prepare plana and specifications, and to report upon the advisability of using the present boiler for heating the water. It was also decided to provide accommodation for bicycles, and that a footpath be formed in front of the building. Or. Allen said there was a strong feeling that the water should be made tepid. If this were done the baths would be used in winter as well as summer. The lessee was certainly doing his best to make the place attractive, there being rope ladders, a trapeze, etc., and the public evidently appreciated the convenience. The Mayor and Crs. Roche, Rose, and Stead also spoke favourably on the matter, and in complimentary terms of the lessee.
