Cricket.

On Wednesday, Bth inst., H>e return match between the employes of Herbert Haynes and Co., and Thomson and Beattie was played on the Park Reserve, when the latter reversed the position of the previous week and won by 14 runs. Thomson and Beattie’s employes in their first innings were all disposed off for 32 runs —McNeilage 9 being the principal scorer. Following on, the employes of Herbert Haynes and Co., made 45 runs —J. H. Ridland (16) being the only one to reach double figures. Time was then called, when refreshments provided by the employes of Thomson and Beattie were handed round by their lady friends. On play being resumed Thomson and Beattie’s employes made a much better stand, and 69 runs were registered before the last wicket fell —Spence (26) giving a fine display of cricket. Requiring 56 runs to win, the employes of Herbert Haynes commenced their second innings but were all disposed of for 42 runs —McCarthy (14) Berry (10, not out) being the only ones to make a stand against the bowling of J. Thomson and A. Spence. A word of praise is due to the umpires (Messrs A. Widdas and T. Kingsland) whose decisions were recognised to be based on a thorough knowledge of the game. We are very pleased to see that these firms have started the ball rolling, and hope that others will soon follow their example, as apart from a very enjoyable outing for indoor workers, we have no idea what talent is dormant in some of our young men. The final match will be arranged immediately after the holidays, and judging from the close finish of the two previous ones, it should prove very interesting.
