MORNING STAR RETURNS.
The s.s. Invercargill brought over on Saturduy a cake of 3690 z. I7dwt. of retorted gold, value £1520, from 12050 z. 17dwt. of amalgam and 267 tons hulled, besides having on hand 39dwt. 19grs. amalgam from last month’s tailings. Some trouble arose with the battery, two of the stampers having to be hung up for about a fortnight, so that the mill has not made anything like full time for the ten heads during the four weeks, but new stampers have been fixed and the battery is now in full swing again. The assayers report of the return No. 28 gave the highest assay the gold has shown since January, 1896, being 23 carats 1 and 2-Bth grain, so that while the gold as received from the mine weighed 3600z5. 16dwt. the company were paid for 380'3650z. as standard gold (£l4Bl Os lid). The returns just received make the total yield from the mine 80750 z. lOdwt. ; value £32,770, from 6632 tons of stone.
