DUNLOPS ACROSS AUSTRALIA.
Mr A. Mather (The Dunlop and Austral Coy’s, representative on the overland ride) wires as follows ; William’s Creek, Friday. Oct. Bth.. We are passing through here this afternoon for Strangway’s Springs. Wo had heavy head winds on Tuesday and Wednesday, and travelling along' the railway line was exceedingly heavy and difficult, sand prevailing for miles. To-day has been much' more favourable, though the flies are very troublesome. The weather is still warm, the thermometer registering 82 deg. in the shade. My machine is standing splendidly, and the tyres are in perfect order, no* punctures having yet been sustained. We understand there is a heavy road between this and Hergotc Springs, which will militate against fast travelling, but we anticipate fairly good road from Parachilna to Adelaide. Coleman and myself are enjoying the best of health, but we can only average six miles an hour on the railway line. October 9th, 1897 We arrived here this evening, having /left William’s Creek on Friday morning with a wind favourable forfast time. It was not of much use, however, owing to the heavy sand' prevailing between William Creek and Strang way s Springs, making it absolutely necessary to stick to the railway line. The ballast was very loose and heavy, and made progress difficult. There was good running from there to Coward Spring. We reached Stuart’s Creek the same night, and rode,6B miles from there to here to-day. Our distance total from Oodnadatta is now 257 miles for five days. We had heavy weather to-day, getting wet through twice. The roads consequently were terribly boggy, necessitating again travelling on the railway. We leave here tomorrow, and expect to reach Adelaide; Thursday.
