FOREST HILL.

The first month of spring is almost ended, but although the days have been very warm a slight frost at night checks the growth of anything that has been tempted from its hiding place by the bright sunshine during the day. To-day (Monday) there are indications of wind, which will probably drive away all frost and

also dry the ground, Which' has bee 11 worked sufficiently to allow for th e sowing of grain, which I am sure a good many are now anxious to go on with. Turnip feed for sheep is very plentiful this year, and the difficulty will be to get it eaten off in time to get the ground ploughed where it is intended to sow grain. The concert, which was to have been given' some time ago by the united bands of Gap and Forest Hill, has been fixed for about the second week in October —the exact date will 'be settled later. At'the last meeting of the Debating Society essays were given by Mias Clark and Mr S. Buxton. The former chose for her subject “ Town Life,” while Mr Buxton discoursed about the “Average Bachelor.” Both papers proved very interesting, and the second one caused a good deal of discussion. Next evening will be devoted to a musical programme — some fresh talent being included in the list of contributors. Mrs Baldwin, who was well known in this district, died in the Invercargill hospital on Sunday. She leaves a husband and a large family, some of whom are grown up, to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday, leaving the Gap Hoad for the Winton Cemetery, and was largely attended.
