INVERCARGILL ATHENÆUM
The annual meeting of subscribers, held in the Reading Room on Thursday evening, was attended by 30 persons, in addition to members of the committee.
The President (Mr J, Gammell) in moving the ad option ofthe reportand balance-sheet, said , that they began the year with a credit balance of £136, and ended it with one of £lO9. The actual income for the year had been £879 4s lOd, and out of this £3OO had to be paid for interest on, the debt of £SOOO, represented by debentures. He added that the number of subscribers, was greater than ever before, and that the income had
slightly improved. The report, which suggested that the ladies’ room should be utilised for the purposes of the library, waa adopted. The election of a com* mittee fer the ensuing year resulted in the return of Messrs Spronll, Hiskens, W. H. Hall, J. Gammell,. Wilcox, J, Feldwick, and F. W* Wade, who were re-elected, and Dr Mnlbolland and B. Dickinson. Mr Gammell was re-elected President, and Mr Sproull treasurer, and Mr Dickinson was appointed secretary. The question of opening the Reading Room on Sunday evenings aa well as in the afternoons- as at present —was raised, and after a discussion it was decided to deal with the matter at a special meeting. A vote of thanks was passed to theretiring committee aod to the staff, the chairman making special refer - ence to the zeal with which theLibrarian discharged his duties.
