MATAURA.

The town had a very busy appearance on Thursday (our monthly sale day)—quite a change from the usual humdrum state into which we have drifted of late. A series of evangelistic services have been conducted during the past week by the Rev Mr Pairmaid of Kaitangata. The meetings were well attended throughout, especially so during the last few nights, when the Presbyterian Church was filled to the door. The effect of the services on the congregation, as a body, has been the instilling of renewed vigour into them, spiritually and otherwise. The members of the Choral Society have decided to assist the school to get up a concert. The object is to raise funds for the benefit of the

school. The tournament in connection with the Draughts Club is expected to end on Monday evening:, and it is thought the season will then close, as the club will require to shift their quarters owing to circumstances over which they have no control.

Our cricketers held their annual meeting on Saturday evening. Attendance good, finances satisfactory, great enthusiasm.

Our tennis players are also on the move, and the courts are being put in order tor the opening day. The meeting of theMutnallmprovement Class on Friday evening last was not the success it should have been with such an interesting subject for discussion, as the works of Sir Walter Scott. The president (Mr Galt) introduced it in a nicely written paper, in which he gave a short sketch of the author and bis works. Several readings and recitations were also given from the same works,- but speakers were few and far between. One notable feature was that two beginners made their maiden effort, and did so well that they ought to be at it again on the first opportunity.
