AUSTRALIANS v. SOUTH OF ENGLAND.
Unpropitious weather was experienced for the last of the Australian matches in England. The attendance good and the wicket heavy. The Australians batted first and were all out for 222, of which Hill knocked up bis 65 in an hour and a half. He and Trumble, 26 (not out), put on 51 runs for 30 minute’s play. Jones 26. Donnan 11, Trott and Gregory 10 each, Giffen and Iredale 17 each, liohmann took 4 wickets for 63, Richardson, 3 for 54; Townsend, 2 for 62; Hayward, 1 for 15, and Hearne, 0 for 16. The South of England team, which consisted of Grace, Townsend, Hayward, Brock well, Lohmann, Hearne, Bull, Richardson, Killick, Stoddart, and Abel, commenced their innings, and at the close of the day’-’s play the score stood at 31 for 1 wicket. Owing to heavy rain the match was not resumed until the afternoon of the following day, when all were disposed of for 192 runs —Grace 62, Abel 25, Hayward 21, Brockwell 14, Killick; 16, Hearne (not out) 29, Richardson 15. McKibbin captured 6 wickets for 65, Giffen, 4 for 83 ; Trumble, 0 for 36. In the second innings of the Australians the ball proved too good for the bat, the whole team being put out fjr 63, of which Donnan 16, Hill 11, only reached double figures. Hearns created quite a panic by his marvellous bonding, obtaining the splendid average of 6 for 8. Lohmann took 4 for 45, Requiring 94 runs to win the Home team had 2 wickets down when time was called, the visitors saving what appeared a certain defeat. Stoddart 10, Abel 24, Hayward 11. McKibbin secured the 2 for 30 runs, and Giffen had 13 scored off him. The fielding of both teams w-as excellent. Donnan reached his 1,000 runs in this match. The 7 \ match was drawn.
