[From Our Own Correspondents.J RIYERTOH. For a change the cry has been for rain. Empty tanks are now the order of the day, and the miners are m sore straits. I have it on the beet of authority that the two companies at Round Hill have not been working’ quarter lime during the last four weeks. The races on Easter Monday were largely patronized—in fact there was a record attendance, and the Club will be able to add to their large surplus. 'jEighty pounds were taken at the gates, which is in itself something out of the common. The newly-formed Athletic Club’s sports, held on Tuesday last, were & complete success, every item on the programme going off without a hitch, which speaks well for the management. Batt, a new man, won the 100 yards, with 10yds handicap, closely followed by the veteran Gr. Harris, from scratch. Hodgetts won. the champion chopping,,. Fallow the mile race, and Gr. Harris the 440yds hurdles. The sawing was annexed, by the More Bros. Mr John Pattisoa, senr., as starter, was very good indeed in getting the men off well, and Mr James O’Jiowd, the Secretary, was a host in himself, being indefatigable in his endeavours to make everything successful. On Wednesday last Miss M. Heave was united in wedlock to Mr Gr. Tolhurst, cf Wellington. The Presbyterian Church was densely packed. The bride and bridegroom departed by the afternoon train on their honeymoon trip, accompanied by the best wishes of the community at large. The Riverton Rifle Volunteers have received their ne.v uniforms, which are a credit to the makers, the Hew Zealand Clothing Factory, and another proof that local industry should be encoui’aged.
