A cannibal chief in the New Guinea group has been captured by a rival tribe and killed and eaten. A bush worker near Masterton has come in for a legacy of £15,000. The Progressive Liberal Association of Christchurch are endeavouring to formulate a political platform that shall be recognised throughout the colony. At an inquest on the bd'dy of an illegitimate child at Wrexham, England, it was elicited that the sister of the mother of the child had kept herself and three others on 5s 6d a week the remainder of her wages (9s) going in rent. The Canadian Government has decided to purchase 40,000 MartiniEnfield rifles with which to arm the Canadian militia. The North Wales slate trade is threatened with competition by the slate quarries of New England. It is stated that a consignment of 3,500,000 American slates will reach Cardiff shortly.

To the astonishment of all who knew him, the late Jacob Cohen, under-beadle of the Central Synagogue, London, has (says the Jewish Chronicle), left a large hoard of savings. After his death his lodgings in Great Titchfield street was examined and a large sum in gold and notes was discovered in all kinds of hiding places. The total value of the property found will be little short of £5,000. It writes ‘ With only two or three batteries at work we are producing 6000 or 6000 ozs. of gold per month, and are also producing it from fewer tons of stone thu,n the same quantity is derived from in any other part of the world. , . .... As soon as a plentiful supply of water is available the output of gold will surprise the whole earth.’ Tbe Rev. Mr Lochore, Wesleyan minister at Riverton, is to have the assistance of a missionary. The sacred concert given in the Theatre Royal on Sunday evening by the Misses Blaney and Mongredien, assisted by local musicians, attracted a great audience. The building was packed alow and aloft, and the atmosphere became so stifling upstairs that several ladies staggered out when the programme was about half through. The largest cargo steamer ever built in England or Scotland was recently launched from Doxford and Co.’s Yard, Sunderland. She is named the Algoa, is 475 feet Jong, and is of 11,300 tons capacity. With the exception of the Georgic, built at Belfast, she is the largest afloat.
