Football Notes.
The members of the' different teams in town have donned their ‘ togs ’ -for ; another season, and already have had a couple of practices. ,/■ <■' v ' y
Mr Masters, of Tay street, has offered a cup valued at £5 5s for the team winning the championship two years in succession, or three years at intervals. ' This will ensure a big struggle between the three teams, and it is to be hoped a friendly spirit will rule throughout all the niatches.
j; Several players have changed their coats —-or, rather, their jerseys-— 1 since last season. Mbir has forsaken the Pirates to play in the forward division of the Stars, and another one is spoken ’ of as' likely to leave the wearers of the skull and crossbones. :The“ Stars lose : Gr. Ramsay and Catneroh, who will play for the I.P.C. Ramsay will considerably strengthen the forward division of the Bines. Another good man in the person of Walsh, wlib travelled the colony with the New South Wales team last year, has found his way into the ranks of, the Invercargill Club. This Club had a very miserable time of it last year, but with the new blood thus acquired should make things 1 hum ’ during the coming winter. Constable Williams, who figured prominently as a forward ;in the Maori team during their Home tour, is stationed here just now. Could he not be added to the referee list P He should be a decided acquisition. Cuff does not intend to play again, and his place in the Star team Will be taken by Mills, who played for Riverton last year. He is a smart little player, and is likely to develop into a tricky half. . Royds, who represented the Eastern District in the * interpro ’ match last year, throws in his lot with the Blues.
In seconding the proposal of two well known players of a local dab, who played a prominent part ‘in ’ and ‘ out ’ of three principal matches last year, as members of a certain lodge in town, the other night, the seconder, who happened to be the President of the Club, jocosely said that all he knew against them, was that they were jolly good footballers. H. Mcßobie, one of the Pirates’ crack forwards, will captain that team, and Heave, who was a looker-on throughout last season, will skipper the Blues, while Bain, fora second term, fills a similar position in the Star team. Wishing footballers one and all a pleasant season, Poster.
