NEW BOILER CONSTRUCTED.
—4— HIGH PRESSURE MAINTAINED LONDON, Sept. 11. Boilers with a pressure of 10001 b t» the square, inch will be the next stage in the wav, steam versus oil. This step is the outcome of tests conducted by a, Clyde syndicate, which includes Sir Charles Parsons (chairman of. C. A. Parsons and Co., Ltd., and Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Co, Ltd.), a past president of the North-east. Coast Institution of Engines and Shipbuilders, William Denuv and Brothers, Ltd., and Yarrow and Co., Ltd., tho Glasgow shipbuilding firms. , , . Super-pressure boilers, AVifh the mdicator showing GOolb. to tho square inch, developed a speed of. 202 knots in the trials, enabling a gain from .10 to 15 per cent, in economy, compared with ordinary boilers. Sir Charles Parsons expresses the opinion that this saving nearly approaches that of Diesel oil engines. Sir John Biles, Professor of Naval Architecture at Glasgow University, 1891-1921, says high-pressure turbines wil be more economical than Diesel engines up to 10,000 miles, enabling steam to regain its ascendency. Tho syndicate is building five more steamers of greater tonnage.
