Seven Chinamen were charged at the Magistrates Court yesterday, with threatening ana attempting to minder two compatriots, uu account, it was alleged, of the latter's assumed connection with the recent police raids on Chinese gaming houses. Alter a long hearing, the presiding Justices announced the case as being simply a dispute between two tribes. FRISCO MAIL OUTWARDS. NEW GAOL RULES,

In consequence of the agitation which has arisen through the treatment of Lillywhite in gaol, the Justice Department has decided to frame new regulations which shah provide different treatment for persons awaiting trial from those under sentence. THE MINISTER OF LANDS. ’

The Minister of Lands returned from Wanganui last night, and will, with the Secretary to the Agricultural Department, go south on Tuesday to attend the Dunedin A .and P. Show. MRS LONG’S CASE.

The Minister of Justice has received a petition from Christchurch, asking that Mrs Long, who was sentenced by Justices to 14 days’ imprisonment for ill-treating her step-children, may be released on her owr recognisance pending an application to the Governor that the sentence be remitted. The Minister replied that this cannot be done, but he has instructed Mr Beetham, S.M., to report fully on the case after consultation with the Justices. A LABOUR DISPUTE.

Captain Cooper/ of Wellington, has returnd from Home after arranging for the working of the Chatham Islands sponge fields. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Amne Maria Mitchley. 51 years of ag'who died in the hospital.
