The Baptist Union.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. November 22. The Baptist Conference session resumed this morning. It was resolved to authorise a committee to aid by grants the building of new churches. In connection with the forward movement, an enthusiastic discussion took place on home mission work, and some strongly practical schemes were under discussion. The Conference resolved, on the motion of the Rev. W. L. Salter, to encourage and organise the work of local preachers as now before it. The Rev. Mr Salter urged the inception of a scheme to give status to and organise the work of local preachers. The Assembly warmly endorsed a resolution of the Rev. A. Dewdney, definitely committing the Union to prosecute vigorous home mission work It was resolved that the Jubilee Conference be held in Nelson in November, 1901. The Invercargiill Church also invited the conference for next year.
At the afternoon session papers were read by the Rev. Mr Muirhead on “ Citizenship ”; by the Rev. Mr North on “ Municipal Government ”; by the Rev. Mr Martin on “ The Press,” afid by the Rev. Mr Gray on “ Christianity and Commerce.” In the evening a very largely attended public meeting was held. The church was filled. “Social Evils” were discussed by the Rev. Mr Dewdney, who spoke on purity; the Rev. Air Dallaston on gambling, and the Rev. Mr Cox on temperance.
