THE SCHOOLS.

PAEEOEA SCHOOL. The annual picnic of the Pareora school was held in the school grounds on Monday last when favoured with fine weather a large gathering assembled, the ground being quite thronged. The school treat is regarded as a public holiday in the district when old and young come together to enjoy themselves. Sports for the children were engaged in during the afternoon, also several exciting bicycle races were got off. The married ladies’ race, won by Mrs Ford, caused great excitement, the prize, a handsome Christmas cake, presented by Mr Budd, inducing a large number of entries. The committee’s arrangements for catering, etc., proved satisfactory. In the evening the school was packed to the door to witness the distribution of prizes by the Hon, W. Hall-Jones, who gave a suitable and instructive speech. The chairman of committee (Mr J. Paterson) read an extract from the inspector’s report, showing the good results of the past year’s work, and moved a hearty vote of thanks to the teaching staff, which was carried; also to the donors of special prizes—the Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Mrs Cockayne and Messrs *P. W. Hutton and Co. The children gave three hearty cheers for the committee and brought the proceedings to a close, the day having been marked by good feeling on all sides.
