Hard Work at Sea

AUCKLAND, August 11.

The! barquentine May, bound from VVhangavoa to Sydney with timber, has put back to Auckland making ten inches of water per hour. She left Whangaroa on July 28th and encountered Igales and mountainous S( as, and on August 3rd a hurricane with terrible sea. The ship strained heavily and made a lot of water. The crew have been at the pumps since August 3rd.

Fires- N MASTERTON, August 11.

A fifteen-roomed house, belonging to J, Montgomery, builder, of Manaia, near Masterton, was burned down this morning. There is an insurance of £450. The occupier was absent on a visit to Wanganui. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a spark from the open fireplace.

A large dwelling-house at Lower Hutt, owned by Dr Coates and occupied by Mr G. A. Pearson, of the Railway Department, was burned down yesterday. The house was insured for £750 in the Norwich Union and the furniture for £450 in the Northern Office. Mr Pearson estimates his loss at £250 above the insurance.
