A Man Killed in the Tunnel.
The Lyttelton Times reports that a fatal accident occurred on the LytteltonChristchurch line yesterday evening. The train with Ashburton school excursion left Lyttelton on the return journey, and upon arrival at the Christchurch railway station it was reported to the guard that a man had fallen off the train in the tunnel. The person, a resident of Winslow, who supplied the information to the guard, did not know the man’s name, but thought it was Alexander M’Lellan, also a resident of Winslow. The Traffic Manager at once telegraphed to Mr MTntyre, stationmaster at Lyttelton, who immediately took an engine and went through in search of the man. The body was found about a quarter of a mile from the Heathcote end, and taken to Lyttelton. Dr Pairman was on the train, but he could only pronounce life to be extinct. The deceased had sustained severe bruises about the head, there being a deep dent on the forehead, an ugly gash behind the left ear, and a bad bruise at the base of the skull. The body was uninjured, and the unfortunate fellow had evidently been killed by the fall. A number of the excursionists returned to Lyttelton last night, but were unable to identify the body. (By Telegraph.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 12. The body of the man killed in the Lyttelton tunnel yesterday has been identified by Ashburton residents as A. McLellan. There are no further particulars.
