CBt Telegraph. ) Death of Bishop Luck. AUCKLAND, Januaiy 23. The Kight. Eev. James Edmund Lack, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, died this morning from heart disease. FireMr Marriner’s gum and general store at Mount Wesley, Northern Wairoa, has been burned down. The buildings and stock were insured in the South British for £1290, and the buildings in the Northern £2OO. Police Returning. The police detachment in the Uriwera Country is being reduced to three men, the remainder returning to Auckland. Congratulatory. The Premier has telegraphed to the chairman of the Navy League that it is with pleasure that he advises forwarding the resolution of the league to Lora Salisbury through the proper channel re his conduct in the Venezuelan and Transvaal questions. The lonic. WELLINGTON, January 23. The lonic arrived at Plymouth on the 21st inst, with her frozen meat in good condition.
The Christchurch Election* CHRISTCHURCH, January 23. Mr R. M. Taylor, a candidate for the vacant seat for Christchurch, addressed a fairly large meeting of electors last night. He announced himself as a strong Government supporter. Breach of the Licensing Act. At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this morning, Daniel Crawford was charged that being a prohibited person he was found in the Zetland Hotel, and J. M. Walker, licensee, was charged with permitting Crawford to remain in the hotel. The evidence showed that Crawford had gone to the hotel to pay an old account and tendered a cheque, but he was notsupplied with liquor. The charge against the licensee was dismissed. The magistrate said that Crawford had committed a technical breach of the Act, rendering himself liable to a penalty of £5,- but under the circumstances he would fine him Is without costs. V ' Fatal Accident.
A man namfed John Bullen, employed as night engineer at the fellmongery at th<* Belfast freezing works was found this morning lying across the engine, dead. His right hand had caught in the machinery, while in the act of oiling the engine, and his body had been dragged round the shaft Deceased was aged about 26, and has a wife and three children in Dunedin.
Fire Insurance. IN VERCARGILL, January 23. At a meeting of the committee of the Invercargill Fire Insurance League last night, the chairman, MrJ. Kingsland,
stated that 1500 copies of the league’s proposals had been circulated in Australasia. From 30 to 40 replies had been received from public bodies, all favourable to the scheme. Applications from Canada for copies of the document had had been complied with. In view of the conference of delegates a deputation had that day waited on the Colonial Treasurer who had stated that the Government proposal on the subject would not be made public till it was laid before Parliament, so that the conference would not have an opportunity to consider the Bill. Mr John Kingsland was appointed the league’s delegate to the Wellington meeting.
