The Hawaiian i Minister for Foreign Affairs has arrived here to support the proposed American cable to Hawaii, and declares that the Hawaiian Government are averse to a foreign-owned cable. ' The Republicans advocate a subsidy to laying an American cable to Hawaii instead of granting one of the Sandwich Islands to Great Britain as a landing station. BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro, January 14. The Brazilian troops are pursuing the insurgents of Rio Grande, who crossed the Uruguayan frontier. The latter’s troops opposed their advance, and several were killed. SKATING ACCIDENTS. London, January 14. Many skating accidents have occurred at London. Hundreds were immersed through the ice breaking, and several fatalities are reported. LORD RANDOLPH CHURCHILL. FRENCH POLITICS. Paris, January 14. M. Bartlon, Minister for Public Works, has resigned owing to a technical difficulty in connection with his department. The members of the Chamber of Deputies who hold socialist views have been suspended on the ground of insulting behaviour. THE CHELFORD RAILWAY COLLISION. At the inquest on the bodies of the victims of the recent railway collision, at Chelford the jury found that no one was i criminally liable for the accident, and added a rider recommending that no shunting be carried on during the passing of the express trains.
