lIMABU V. UNION,
A good deal of interest was taken in the match played on tha 8.0.A.A. Club's ground yesterday afternoon, between the first fifteens of the Timaru and Union Clubs, and there was a large attendance of spectators—about 400, including many ladies. The afternoon was’fairly suitable for the play, a nor’-west brotze giving some bias to one side. The match was an even one, and the play better than usually eean in inter-club matches here, bei- g on the whole open and interesting to • watch. Timaru won the toss, and elected to play with the wind, the Union kicking off. Play waa very even for the first 20 minutes, when Timaru got on a fine rush, and earned the ball close to the Union line. Oox marked near the centre, and the ball being placed Cocks sent it over the bar. This, roused the Beds, and they worked the play down in front of the Timaru goal, and Helean 1 getting the ball from a scrum passed to Murdoch, who neatly potted a goal, making the scores equal. The first spell ended without farther score. During the interval the wind shifted and again assisted the Yellows By hard forward work the Beds worked the ball to their opponents’ 25 flag, whence Quinn made a splendid dribble, 1 and scored midway between the corner and the goal posts- The try waa not improved. The Beds continued their tactics and Hobbs got in near the corner, the kick going wide. The Yellows then played more determinedly, and Johnston obtaining the the ball, made a capital run and scored near the corner flag ; this time Cocks failed to improve the score. Thenceforward the play went first one *ay and then the other, and no further score was made, the Union team being the victors by 8 points to 6. By rBLiouAD-.) was played at Petone yesterday. Auckland scored two goals before the game was we 1 started, but after that had all the worst of it.
