A Boom in Land,

NAPIER, August 25

There has been a great demand for Crown land for settlement in the Hawkes Bay district lately. At the Crown Lands Office a ballot took place for several sections when 154 applications were opened for one section in the Woodville Survey district, and 40 applied for a small area at Norwood. There were also a large number of applicants for three acre village sections in Poverty Bay, 119 applying for five sections placed in the market. Altogether in one week 343 applications were received for 10 sections. The New Zealand Chess Club. WELLINGTON, August 25. The reconstruction of the New Zaaland Obets Club is completed. The following office-bearers have been elected President, Sir Bobert Stout; Vice-Presidents, Mr Justice Denniston,Mr H. Hookham (Canterbury), Hon. John Bryce, Mr O. W. Benbow (Wellington), Messrs J M. Lennox and A. J. Jo wilt (Auckland), Mr Justice Williams, and Mr John Roberts O.M.G, (Otago) ,* hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr P. W. Tait (Wellington). The next congress will be held at Dunedin, beginning in December. An Inquest. At the inquest on the fisherman Lang don, who was drowned at Otaki, the evidence showed that the boat capsized near the shore, and deceased managed to get on the boat, which drifted to sea. When the boat was recovered two hours after the accident, Langdon was found hanging to the boat, but quite dead. Attempted Suicide. A man named Georgs Evans, a plumber, who was joined with a man named Bailey on a charge of stealing pigeons, to-day, attempted suicide by swallowing some spirits of salts. Evans’condition is soriouo, and it is doubtful if he will recover. He is about 45 years of age, and a married man. The case was called on this morning, and put back owing to his non-appearance. Obituary. DUNEDIN, August 25. Dr Blair, brother of the late Bngineer-in-Chief, died to day, from dropsy.
