NEWS OF THE DAY.
The firebell rang out an alarm at 8.25 on Saturday night. The fire was a small one, being confined to a foul chimney in the home of Captain Falleson at the top of Church street. The alarm caused a great stir in the main street, which was crowded at tbe time.
Mr Hall, member of the Tourists Cycling Club, who has been chosen to represent Now Zealand at the Australian championship meeting, to be hold iu Sydney, leaves Titnaru by the express to-day, and the team leave Lyttelton by the Wakatipu on Wednesday. The club intend trying to get permission from headquarters to have tbe fifty mile road record held hero. It bas also been decided to try and arrange with the Athletic Club re banking corners of tbe track.
Tbe many friends of Mr Thomas Henderson, the well known contractor, will learn with deep regret that be died last evening, after being ill for only a few days. He caught a severe cold while superintending his contract at the Opihi bridge, the week before last, and inflammation of the lungs setting in, a fatal result followed. The deepest sympathy will b e felt for his young widow, hie parents, and his brothers and sisters; and by his death the Caledonian Society, the Builders’ Society, and Masonic Lodge lose a coos', valuable member.
