TH® OHAMPION3BIP 2 MEETING. (By Telegraph.) OHEIBTOHUROH. Fbb 5. The Amateur Ohampionthip Sports were postponed for an hour on account of the track being too soft from the rain of the previous night. The weather was dull and threatening, but there was a very good attendance. The programme opened at 3 30 with the 250 Yards Flat Championship, First Heat. J. H. Hcmptoa 1 N. L. Gurr ... ... 2 J. 0. Hutchison 3 These were the only starters. Won very easily ; second and third close together. Time—27 2 sth. see. Second Heat. Peter Wood (Canterbury) ... ... 1 J. Buchanan (Auckland) ... 2 W. A. Low (Dunedin) 3 These were the only starters. Won by three yards; the second and third close up. Time—27 l-sth sec. Final Heat. J. Hempton (Hawke’s Bay) 1 P. Wood (Christchurch) 2 N. L. Gurr (Wellington) 3 Buchanan, Auckland, also started. Hempton jumped away in front, and though Wood, who got away badly, challenged him in the straight, Hempton just lasted long enough to win all out by 2 yards; Gurr, 7 yards away, third. Time—26 8 Bsco. Three Mile Waleis® Championship of New Zealand. (Record 23min 37 2 sth sec.) Cocks ... ... 1 Burton 2 Bain (Oundin) ... 3 Only these started. Cooks led *fxom the start. Bain fell away in the second mile and was out of the race. Cocke held the lead till the last lap when Burton passed him, and a grand finish took place, Cocks winning amid great excitement by three yards. Time—23min 16 2 6th sees This beats the New Zealand record. The race was the beat ever seen in tho colony. Half Mile Flat Championship. (Secord 2min.) J, F. Grierson, Canterbury 1 O. G Roes, Canterbury 2 D. Wood, Canterbury ... 3 Seven others started. This was a grand race, the winner leading from the start and winning by half a yard j Wood a good third. Time- 2min 3seo. One Mile Safety Bicycle Championship. A 0. Wilmot (Canterbury) 1 W. L. Kerr (Sydney) 2 B. P. Clarkson (Canterbury) ... ... 3 Rallingabaw and Langdown also started. Kerr led till the last lap, when Wilmot came away with n grand spurt and won by 20 yards; Herr second, Clarkson third, Balliashaw fourth, Langdown not completing the distance. Time 2m in 433ee. High Jump. Meyrick (Manawa'u) 6ft sin ... ... 1 Oufl: (Canterbury) sft 4in ... ... 2 Hackett (Auckland) sft 3ia ... ... 3 Gore (Wellington), Moir (Canterbury), Postlelhwaito (Canterbury), also competed 'i HEBE Mils Ordinary Bicycle Kingston (Dunedin) ... ... ... 1 Wilson (Canterbury) 2 Hayward (Canterbury! 3 Clarkson and Ledaharo (Canterbury) also started. Wilson led for 2 miles, when Kingston and Hayward ran up to him, and Kingston taking the lead in tho last lap won by 10 yards from Wiison, with Hayward a bad third. Time—dmin 53 2 6th beo. Ten Mile Safety Bicycle Race. Kerr (Sydney) ... 1 Wilmot (North Canterbury) ... ... 2 Langdown (Canterbury) 3 Clarkson and Ballingshaw (Canterbury) also started. After 2 miles all but tbe placed men retired. Kerr going away as he liked won by 500 yards from Wilmot with Langdown 60 yards further off. Time—32min 49 2-sth see. 120 Yards Huedles. Moir (Canterbury) ... 1 Fostlethwaite (Canterbury) ... ... f Batger (Wellington) t Cuff won the first heat, and Batger tbe second, the final resulting as above. Moir and Fostlethwaite went off at the word “set” and were 4 yards away by the time Batger and Cuff got off. Cuff fell at the first hurdle, and Ba'ger was not able to get up. Moir
won by 6 inches, with Batger and Postleth waite a dead heat. Time—l 6 3 sth sec. 1 Mils Flat. Burke (Dunedin) 1 Rees (Canterbury) 2 Wood (Canterbury) ... ... ... 3 Farqubar (Auckland), and Noil (Dunedin) aUo star ed. Burke waa quickest away, and followed by Wood, Rees, Farquhar and Neil in the order named led until the half mile post was reached. Here Wood ran up to the leader, and passing the stand was just clear of Burke w>th Sees and other two close up. This order was maintained until 200 yards from Home when Burke joined Wood, and Rees making his effort 100 yards further on a great race resulted in a foot victory for B urke; Wood 4 yards away, third. Time—4min 42 4 sth sec. 10 Mile Bicycle Back, Obdinaby. Clarkson (Canterbury) ... 1 Hayward (Canterbury) 2 Kingston (Dunedin) 3 Thompson and Wilson also started. After going 6 miles only the placed men were loft in the race. Kingston forced the racing till the last lap was reached, when Clarkson and Hayward passed him and a great struggle between the three saw Clarkson win by 8 yards from Hayward, with Kingston 10 yards away third, lime -35 min 6 4 6th sec.
