Anglican Genaral Synod.
(By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 5. This afternoon the Anglican Synod was occupied in debasing the following motion, brought forward by Archdeacon Harper, of Timaru: —“ That in the opinion of this Synod it u desirable that the Education Act should be so amended as to contain a provision for grants in aid of the maintenance of echo.ls set on foot by any religious denomination, provided that the secular instruction given in such schools shall come up to the required standard, and satisfy the Government Inspector; and further that the Legislature be petitioned to the f< regoieg effect." The Rev- A. R. Fitchett, the Bev. A. Towgood, the Bev. E. T. Howell, and others, strongly supported the motion. Mr James Alien opposed it. 1 he debate was interrupted by the 6 o'clock adj inrnmont. The debate ou the education question was continued at the Anglican Synod to-night. Archdeacon Mules moved an. amendment to the resolution “ That as denominational schools can only be maintained in large centres of population, provision should bo made for the imparting of religious instruction by the teachers in public schools, and that the legislature be petitioned to the foregoing effect.” The amendment was lost on a division by 24 to 11, and Archdeacon Harper’s motion carried on the voices.
