To-day’s play in the cricket match between the Englishmen and Australians was characterised by the greatest excitement. Bannerman' and Bruce brought the score into the third century before their partnership was dissolved. McLeod, after batting, had to return to Melbourne owing to a family bereavement. Moses, because of an injury to his leg, was unable to bat atthe last moment, and consequently the Australian team played only 10 men. The innings closed for 391, leaving the Englishmen 230 to make to win. Bannerman, whose score amounted to 91, was nearly nine hours at the wickets. Bruce played a dashing innings of 72. McLeod made 18; Turner (not out 1 , 14 ; Callaway, 0 ; Blackham, 0. The Englishmen fielded splendidly. Luhmann secured 2 wickets for 84; Briggs 4 for 69; Attwell I for 43 ; Sharpe 1 for 91 ; Peel 1 for 49. Grace and Stoddart also bowled, but without success. Heavy showers of rain fell at intervals during the afternoon, interfering with the game. When the slumps were drawn for the day Lord Sheffield’s eleven had lost 3 wickets for 11 runs ; Grace, 5 ; Bean, 4 ; Abel, 1; Stoddart (not out) 1.
