DUNEDIN, June 3.
Emma Parnell for larceny was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. The case against Thomas Barrett, of attempled murder, occupied the Court the most of tho day. The jury retired at 4.30 p.m., but have not returned yet. Lathe.
In the case of James Barrett, charged with attempted murder, the jury returned at 10 o’clock and found the prisoner guilty. He was sentenced to 10 years’ penal servitude The case was one in which an old man named Woods, who had previously been on bad terms with Barrett, was assaulted on his way home 00 a dark night, beaten very severely,
and his horso and dray backed over a preci* pice, falling twenty feet, the horse having its back broken. Woods managed to crawl to the schoolhouse where he remained all night, and for some time his life was despaired of. Barrett left the court, protesting his innocence.
