A shooting match officers and non-commis-sioned officers v. gunners of the T.N.A., will take place to-morrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. The following will represent the officers : Capt. Comdt. G. Laing-Meason, Lieut. Wright, Petty Officers Bradley, Lane, StapIcy, Stevens, Hathaway, and Thompson. For the gunners—Burford, Cuthbort, Beckingham, Waugh, Goaney, Wilson, Toneycliffe. Goodman, Stevenson and Anderson will fire, The match is expected to be a close one. A clever device in house shifting was to be seen in use yesterday, when a good sized tworoomed cottage was being moved from Beach Koad to Maori Hill. Strong beams were placed under the house lengthwise, and a single axle placed under these, near the middle A third beam projected from one end like a pole, and the end of this slung by a chain under the axle of a dray, converted the dray into the fore carriage of a queer four-wheeler- “ Wo could take it to Temuka this way,” said the person in charge, and it seemed as if they could. The member for Glachtone, speaking at Temuka the other evening, mentioned with gratification the “surplus” in the Government Treasury at the end of Iho financial year. “ That is if it was true there was a surplus no doubt it was true.” Again at Pleasant Point he’s aid, “It appears to be bona fide. If not we shall soon find out when we go to Wellington.” Mr Menteath (who is in Wellington now) addressing his constituents there, declared that the credit balance is not bona fide but bogus. The revenue fell short of the estimate by|,'£lo7,ooo, and the Government spent less by £106,000 than the amount appropriated for expenditure. With referto the alleged savings, ho said the Governi ment got £IB,OOO profits, which had accumulated during the past four or five years in the Public Trust office—a windfall which could not occur again. They also showed a saving of £40,000 on tho railway vote, but that ho contended was not a saving, being simply money taken for expenditure and not spent. The local bodies had only got £28,000 out of the £53,000 voted, and there was a “ saving ”of £25,000. That meant, however, that the money had probably been paid on the 2nd or 3rd April .instead of the 31st March, A “ saving ”of £SOOO was claimed on tho interest account, to which the same explanation applied. Savings were also claimed of £7OOO on school buildings, and £16,000 on public buildings—amounts which would have to be paid some time or other. Thus, adding the windfall from the Public Trust Office, a deficiency of about £70,000 was shown, instead of a surplus! A good omen for tho Pavnellitea. On April 6th, twenty members of Parliament entered for a ‘point to point steeplechase.’ It was won by Mr Oyril Flower, M. P., on a I horse called Home Buie.
