Temuka Road Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this board was held yesterday afternoon. Present —Messrs Hayhurst, Eraser, Bissett, Grant, and Snell.

On the motion of Mr Fraser, seconded by Mr Bissett, Mr Grant was elected chairman.

Correspondence was received : From M. Sheehan, applying to have the price of his contract increased. —Application not. entertained.

From Messrs Bruce and Stumbles, requesting permission to cut flax growing on roads under the board’s control, —Granted, provided that the flax be grubbed to the satisfaction of the board’s overaeer.

From Messrs if. Coulter and W. Robertson, applying to have their names removed from the rate roll.—Granted, subject to the present owners’consent.

From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking information re plantation on reserve 1371.—Th0 clerk had supplied the information.

From tho Returning Officer, declaring Messrs A. Grant and W. Snell duly elected members of tho board.

From Messrs Ford and Ogden, circular re supply of drain pipes. From tho Colonial Secretary, informing the board that the appointment of poundkeeper does not require lo bo gazetted. From Mr H. Waller, stating that the culverts authorised to be made near his land on Eangitata have not yet been commenced, To bo done when convenient.

From the Treasury, advising payment of £-3 3s 2d, half rates on Crown lands for the year ending 31st March, lhß9. Mr Lcgcrwood interviewed the board, and requested permission to occupy certain lands, at present unoccupied, on payment of the rates thereon due. —The Board had no power to give such permission. Mr Job Earl attended and asked for pipes for road drain fronting his property at Orari. —Granted.

Mr J. T, Brown waited on the board and requested to have a drain cleaved on the upper side of Clyno’s road.—To be done, provided occupiers of adjoining land pay half cost.

Mr ITawkes’ application for pipes, received at tho previous meeting, was granted. Circulars from Messrs 0. M. Brooke and tho Ashburton Drug Company re poisoned grain were read. Mr Fraser proposed, Mr Snell seconded, and it was carried, that petitions should be left at suitable places in the district for signature by ratepayers who are in favour of a special rate of 1-16th of a penny for the abatement of tho small birds nuisance.

A lithographed plan was received from the Crown Lands Department, with a request that the board would indicate thereon tho road on which they intend to expend tho moneys accruing under the provisions of the Land Act.

It was resolved that sums already accrued bo expended on a portion cf the Main South Koud.

On the motion of Mr Bissctt, eoconded by Mr Snell, Mr Archer was unanimously reappointed clerk and overseer at tho same rate of remuneration as formerly. On the motion of Mr Fraser, seconded by Mr Hay hurst, it was resolved that a general rate of one half-penny on tho rateable value of all property in the road board district be struck; a special meeting to bo called to confirm tho same.

Mr Biesett said that in his opinion it was desirable that a few rails should bo driven at Hawke’s crossing at Orari, to protect the ford.

It was decided to await the result of similar work already done at Penny’s road. Mr Bissctt applied on his own behalf, and that of Mr Austin, to bo allowed the use of the board’s pile driver.—Granted at the usual rate.

Tho hour of meeting was discussed, and it was finally decided not to make any alteration.

The retirement of members in rotation was decide;! by lot, q,nd resulted in Messrs Bisselt and Huy burst being the first to retire. Tho overseer’s report was real and considered, and the following resolutions were passed thereon : “That two wooden culverts on the Waitohi bo replaced with pipe and concrete culverts, and that a ford bo substituted for one on tbo Waitohi Terrace Hoad.”

Gorse notices were placed upon the table for signature. Accounts amounting to £9l 18s 3d were passed for payment. The board then rose.
