NEWS OF THE DAY.

A Government parade of the Timaru Rifles will bo held at the drill shed to-morrow evening at 7.30 in drill order. Afterwards a meeting will ho held to arrange for a series of Morris tube matches for the winter months.

A meeting of the Fairlie Creek School Committee was held on Saturday. Present— Messrs Milne (chairman), Morris, Gall, Pye, Gillingham and Allan. The headmaster reported the attendance for the past three •weeks to have been —Boys 34, girls 22.3, total average attendance 56,3 j greatest number present on one ,day ,69 ; cn roll 76. One tender only was received dor school cleaning, but as it was considered too high Mr Morris was deputed to endeavor to make better arrangements, failing that, to call for fresh tenders. It was also resolved to call for tenders for coal, Messrs Pye and Morris to receive tenders and get coal delivered as soon ns possible. An application was received from Messrs J. Hall and R. Gunniou for use of the schoolroom for tho purpose of holding a ball on tho night of the 24th inst. Granted on the usual terms. sanctioned the retention of tho mistress provided sho agrees to present herself for examination for certificate at the first opportunity, Tho committee having been informed that a large number of children are very irregular in attendance it was resolved that the master be requested to furnish a list of defaulters at next meeting. Mr C. Pye was appointed visitor for the ensuing month. An account of £8 4s for school cleaning was passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
