Contingent with the Colonial Treasurer moving the introduction of a Bill in the Legislative Assembly to provide for the sale of suburban ’hyids-to extinguish the
existing deficit, Mr Henry Copeland,
member for New England, who was returned on the Protection ticket, has given notice of motion, “ That in order to meet the deficit an ad valorem duty of 30 per cent be imposed on fancy articles, carriages, jewellery, drapery (except cotton woollens), glassware, furniture, and other articles, such duties to cease when the deficit is extinguished.” The motion is considered practically a vote of censure on the Government. SHIPPING. Newcastle, April 24. Sailed—Janet Nicoll for Lyttelton. BOILER EXPLOSION AND LOSS OF LIFE. Melbourne, April 24. A boiler at the works of Messrs Pitt and Company, safe makers, at Hotham, exploded to-day, and wrecked the building. The son of one of the proprietors was blown to atoms, and a workman named Ryan was very seriously injured.
