(Hales) 3 ) The other starters were Lochiel, Recall, Plutarch, Honeydew, Keith, Yabba, Amina, Pearl Shell, Papua (New Guinea), and Lady Lyon. Betting at the post—2 to 1 against Keith and Melos, 9 to 1 against Carbine, 10 to 1 against Plutarch and Papua, 12 to 1 against Lochiel, 20 to 1 against the rest. When the flag fell Yabba’a colours were the most prominent, with Amina next, and Lady Lyon next. As the horses rose over the hill Lady Lyon went to the front, and at the halfmile post was six lengths ahead of the field, Plutarch, Keith, and Lochiel, being the closest to her. Rounding the bend Lady Lyon increased her lead, and when passing the stand she was fully fifteen lengths in front of Lochiel, Amina, and Plutarch, who headed the next division consisting of Keith and Plutarch, by a length and a half, the others in a cluster close behind, with Melos, Carbine, and Papua last. Lady Lyon was now hanging out signs of distress, and as the field passed Oxcnham’s she was only four lengths to the good of Amina, with whom wore racing Plutarch, Lochiel, Keith, and Pearl Shell. Along the back stretch the field closed on the leader, and ascending the hill five furlongs from home Lochiel was in front. At the half mile Lochiel had still a little the best of it, with Plutarch, Lady Lyon, and Abercorn, handy. Here Carbine made a forward movement but being interfered with, fell away last. O’Brien, however, soon had him in his stride again, and once more got in the nick. Honeydew now came up fast and joined the leading horses. As the horses swept into the straight it was seen that Lochiel was still ahead, with Abercorn, Honeydew, Papua, Carbine, and Melos, in the order named, following. When fairly in the home rim Hales took Abercorn to the front, and Carbine came with a great rush. At the same time Melos on the outside closed up, and a great race ensued home, the judge giving his verdict in favour of Carbine by a head from Melos, who was a length and a half in front of Abercorn. Then followed Keith, Papua, Yabba, Honeydew, Lochiel, Pearl Shell, Amina, 1 Recall, Plutarch, and Lady Lyon, in the order named. Time—3min 3lscc. Selling Plate, 7 furlongs. (Received 1 a.m., April 25fch.) CARBINE’S YIOTORY. Mr Gannon, owner of Melos, the second horse in the Cup, entered a protest against Carbine, on the ground of jostling, but he handed it in too late to be entertained by the stewards. The Gup race was a remarkably exciting one, and Carbine’s performance was the most brilliant and popular victory ever witnessed on the Rand wick course. Carbine has excelled the doings of all the horses of his age, and the way in which he came at the finish was quite phenomenal. The jockey, M. O’Brien, received a great 'ovation on returning to the paddock. MIDDLE PARK SALE. (By Telegraph.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 24, The annual sale of yearlings at Middlepark took place to-day.
