BRAWLING IN A SYNAGOGUE.
I Herbert Freund, the man who has frequently been in trouble for brawling in St. Paul’s Cathedral and for obstructing the streets near to the Mansion House by preaching the “City’s doom,” was charged lat Marlborough-street P.dice Court with . disturbing the congregation of Jews j assembled for worship in the synagogue, j Great Portland-streot. The prisoner | entered the synagogue on a previous afternoon when the service for the Day of Atonement was being performed by the Rev. Mr Fay. Taking his stand near to the door the , prisoner shouted in a loud voice, “ You Jews why don’t you believe in the Messiah 1 Water d you all. Fire, fire, fire !” when he blew a penny trumpet, and most of the congregation, wondering what was the matter, left their seats. Many of them rushed to the exits, and for a minute or two something like a panic prevailed. Mr J onah Jonas, the warden, gave Freund into custody, and the excitement was thus allayed. The clergyman said he did not hear the word “Fire !” and Mr Bernard Abrahams observed that it might have been mistaken for “ Messiah.” The penny trumpet was produced in court, Freund then began to laugh. He essayed some Scriptural quotations, but the magistrate told him to hold his tongue, and he ordered him to be remanded for a week for inquiries to be made about him, Freund objected to be ro dealt with, and seemed disinclined to leave the dock, but the gaolers took hold of him, and he was quietly led to the cells. He, however, exclaimed ere he accompanied them, “ 1 think the Jews ought to know the great Atonement is Our Saviour, and that He is the only means by which we can salvation. I did not cry out ‘ Fire !’ ”
