The Mayoral Election.

TIMARH.

The mayoral election yesterday created an annsnal amount of excitement and voters were being continually taken to the Town Hall in expresses. The con« test was expected to be a very close one and at a quarter past six o’clock, there was a considerable crowd awaiting out# side the municipal buildings, eager to learn the result. At the hour named, the Eolurniog Officer, Mr £. H. Lough, announced the voting to be as follows:—* Moss Jonas 121 John Jackson 89 Majority for Jonas 32 The announcement was received with applause and both candidates being present, they ascended an express and addressed the crowd.

Mr Jonas thanked both those wbp bad voted for and those who had voted against him, and said that the election had been carried oat in the most friendly manner on both sides. He had been asked to stand, but bad only consented on condition that a better man could not be found. That “ better msn ” was not forthcoming and hence the present con* test, Mr Jackson bad made an excel* lent Mayor, but be bad occupied tbp chair for four years and the result pf the polling bad shown that many people shared bis (the speaker's) opinion that a change was advisable. Mr Jonas then went on to speak of Mr George Cliff, whom he regarded as the best Mayor Timarn bad ever bad, and concluded

Mr Jackson briefly thanked those ratepayers who had voted for him. He was in favor of the office being a rolling one and bad be known Mr Jonas was going to be nominated be would not himself have come forward. During the lime he had been in the Council, in all sixteen years, he had endeavored to do bis duty, and he was grateful for the assistance ho bad always received at the bands of tho Councillors. (Applause.) Three hearty cheers having been given for the returning officer, the crowd dispersed.

[By Telegraph.) Wanganui, Nov. 24. Tho mayoralty election resulted as follows: James Laird Henry N athan 1 Majority for Laird 101 This is the fifth time that Mr Nathan has been defeated. Wellington, Nov. 24. The election of mayor created a good deal of excitement in town to-diy, end resulted in the return of Mr Sumue' Brown, the well-known contractor. The numbers were:— Samuel Brown George Fisher b 45 Majority for Brown ... ... 219 Blenheim, Nov. 24. At the mayoral election to-day Mr W. Douslin was elected by a majority of thirty-four over his opponent, Cr, Eiley. The figures were:— Douslin 201 Eiley. Majority for Douslin 34 The present o:onpant of the office was not a candidate.

WESiroBT, Nov. 24. Mr John Hughes was re-eleoted for the fourth time by a majority of 47 over Mr J. Gay.

Gkbvmouth, Nov, 24. The result of the mayoral election was as follows: — Petrie ••• J 72 Nancatrow 108 Kilgour ... ... 10 It was a very quiet and orderly election, and the result was not unexpected.

Hokitika, Nov. 24. The election contest has excited public attention in town and the country districts all day. Mr James McGoldriok was elected County Chairman of Westland, and Mr B. L. Mitcbel Mayor of Hokitika.

Kumaba, Noo. 24. Mr Henry Bnrger was re-elected mayor to-day, for the third time in succession. The votes were— Burger 77 Francis A. Olden (a borough councillor) 22 Chbistchcbch, Nov. 24. The polling in the Mayoral election took place to-day. The candidates were Thomas Sealy and Alfred Harrison. Both candidates addressed the ratepayers in the Town Hall the night previous, and got votes of thanks. There was very little excitement over the election. The result was declared at seven o’clock, as follows Sealy 100 Harrison 09 Mr Sealy was declared elected. Both candidates returned thanks. Oauabu, Nov 24. The mayoral election took place today. There were three candidates, and the result was as follows: — W. Christie ... 149 j. Sinclair 65 T. Proctor 57 Dunedin, Nov. 24. Mr E. H. Leary was elected Mayor of Dunedin, beating Mr Carroll by a majority of 193. The voting was the heaviest ever polled. . Mr Carroll, the nnsnocessful candidate for the mayoralty, has announced that be intends to take steps to upset the election on the ground that those whose names were placed on the supplementary roll were not allowed to vote.

Ihvbbcarqill,Nov. 25. The mayoral election resulted in the return of David Boche by 399 as against 239 for J. L. McDonald, the retiring mayor.
