TIMARU ELECTION.

A correspondent writes stating that our reporter omitted to report the answers given to the following questions put to Mr Kerr at his meeting in the Theatre Eoyal:—l. Are you not aware that Mr Turnbull never advocated taking the land from these men without compensations. 2. How can you consistently follow Sir Julius Yogel, who is well known to be a Conservative, when you announce yourself distinctly os running on a liberal ticket. The answers were given ns follows;—To question I—Mr Turnbull advocated “bursting up” these estates by special taxation called a progressive land tax. He never in any speech suggested giving compensation to owners of large landed estates for land proposed to be taken from them. To question 2—l can consistently follow Sir Julius Togel, because he is in favor of a land tax in lieu of the present property tax. That will be one strong point gained. Sir Julius Yogel will consolidate parties, and push on the government of the country to the great benefit of all. Other important qustions in my Liberal programme I shall fight for whenever opportunity presents itself, but I prefer to gain those points one by one, rather than by urging them all at once —I should gain none of them. Our correspondent then proceeds to pass a number of uncalled-for strictures on Mr J. H. Sutter which are calculated to injure him in his candidature for Gladstone, and we decline to insert them.
