The first meeting held under the auspices of the recently formed Tradesmen’s Club, took place to-day on the racecourse, at the Washdyke. The weather was remarkably fine but the attendance was meagre in the extreme, considering that the day was a public holiday. The Managing Committee were very energetic in the discharge of their duties and did their best to keep the sport going, but they had a deal to contend against in getting the jockeys to weigh out in time. The meeting opened with a handicap hurdle race for which five horses figured on the card. This race ended as expected in a win for Mr Armitage’s Black Doctor. The following is a detailed account of the racing;— Handicap Huedx.es of 30 sovs,, two miles over eight flights of hurdles. Mr W. S. Armitage’u Black Doctor, aged, list 51bs (Mr P. Jones) 1 Mr J. Lukey’s cb g Pawn, 6 yrs. 10st71bs (A. Hobbs) 2 Mr F. Hedges b g Our Pony Gyrs list. ... ... (Owner) 3

Mr J. Melton’s Myrtle 10st. and Mr W. Moore’s Little Dick also started. Fawn went away with the lead, closely followed by Black Doctor and Our Pony, Little Dick and Myrtle some distance in the roar. The first two hurdles were taken in this order. At the third hurdle Myrtle fell and was out of the race. Little Dick fell at the next hurdle, giving his rider (0. Cornelius) a severe shaking. The other three then went on, and after a good contest came in as above. Farmers’Plate, 20 sovs. One and a half miles.

Nailer and Spofiorth alternately changed positions for second place. Mr P. H. Stock’s Kingsdown, the only other horse that started out of the nine who figured on the card, was a bad fourth. Handicap Time Trot, of 15 sovs. Three miles. No weight under lOst. Mr W. J. Black’s b m Bella, aged, (scratch) 1 Mr W. Moore’s b g What Sort, 4yrs, (60 secs start) 2 Mr P. H. Stock’s cr m Flora, aged (50 secs start) 3

Mr Lukey’s Fawn (60 secs), Mr W. Collins’ hr m Perfect Lady (70 secs) also started. Mr J. PofE’s Councillor was disqualified by the Stewards, because he had been trained by Mr Frank Poff, who was formerly disqualified by the various Jockey Clubs. Mr Collins’ Perfect Lady ran in harness, and when about half the distance had been covered she bolted, capsizing the vehicle in the wheat, and throwing out the driver. She then dragged the capsized vehicle to the fence on the Main Road, which she cleared, the vehicle coming to grief. Her performance caused much amusement among the spectators. Bella won the trot easily, notwithstanding the Jong start the other horses had. Counties Handicap of 50 sovs; miles. Mr M. Sherwin’s ch g Eedcliff, 6yrs, Bst 51b (Derrit) 1 Mr J. Matthews’ bm Mermaid, 4yrs, 9st 71b (0. Hobbs) 2 Mr J. Keen’s b c Faust, 3yrs, Bst 71b (Buddings) 3 Mr W. Moore’s Orange Lightning also ran.

The horses got well away together and Faust and Redcliffe at once made the running with Mermaid in close company. After passing the stand Orange Lightning bolted off the coarse and, pulled up. The trio then made the pace hot and kept fairly well together till entering the straight, when Derritt called upon Redoliffi who answered gamely, winning by a length from Mermaid, Faust a fair third. Moody then came up with a rush, and deliberately crossed Despatch. The owner of Despatch entered a protest against Moody taking the stakes. The protest was disallowed.
