OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY.

[By Telegraph.]

Dunedin, Dec. 7

The Otago Vigilance Committee waited on the Hon. Mr Mitchelson to-day re the Otago Central Bailway. The Minister replied acknowledging the necessity for pushing on the work as rapidly as possible, and said he would give instructions to the Engineer-in-Chief to prepare contracts for the necessary tunnels and viaducts, and bare tenders called for them as soon as they were completed. Ho would have the line made as far as Deep Stream, and it would be his endeavor during his term of office to have the works which had been passed, pushed on as rapidly as possible. He did not believe in keeping them banging over so long as had hitherto been done. He expressed an opinion that it was not the province of Government to find work for the unemployed except in very extreme cases.
