The Messageries Maritimes Company’s steamship Caledonia arrived here this morning. She brings Mauritius advices to November IGth. At that date the weather was favorable, and returns from the sugar districts showed that the crop was equal to the estimate. The sailings included the Thurso, with 400 tons for Dunedin and 200 for Lyttelton. The Ferey was loading for Dunedin with 300 tons. Freights to New Zealand 48s. [Special to Press Association.] London, Dec. 1. The conversion of Now Zealand bonds has proved a most decided success. The amount applied for is £5,389,000, which much exceeds the anticipations. Many of those applying to-day were refused, except in the case of trust funds. The Timaru Harbor Board invite tenders for a loan of £IOO,OOO. The prospectus has been issued of the New Zealand Land Mortgage Company with a capital of £2,000,000, of which it is proposed to raise £200,000 in the first instance. Dec. 2. Further information from the Soudan states that General Hicks was killed by a lancer on the third day of the battle, after all his cartridges had been ox. hausted. Soldiers were offering four dollars for a drink from their comrades' flasks. Professor Nordenskjold proposes an exploring expedition to the Antarctic regions, A rising has occurred in the kingdom of Darfoor (between Bornou and Abyssynia), and the Governor has been wounded.
