IRRIGATION.

MEETING AT WAITOHI FLAT.

A meeting, called by Mr J. Talbot at the Waitohi School-room on Tuesday evening, was attended by over fifty persons. Mr Talbot occupied the chair, and explained that he had called the meeting for the purpose of discussing a proposal to provide a water-supply for Waitohi Plat. It was proposed to irrigate about 8000 acres at an estimated cost of a little over £2OOO. A rate of f d in the £ on the rateable value of the acreage would yield more than the annual cost of maintenance ; and a loan could be arranged, for carrying out the scheme, at 6 per cent. He read a report from Messrs Marchant and Laing-Meason on the subject, presented to the Geraldine Council at its April meeting. After some discussion, it was proposed by Mr Young, seconded by Mr Orr—- “ That this meeting approves of the irri gatioa scheme as submitted by Mr Talbot.” It was moved, as an amendment, by Mr Fraser, seconded by Mr Moore—- “ That the meeting do not agree with the proposal.” The motion was carried on a show of hands. Only about a dozen were held up, however. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
