MR LARNACH’S REPARTEE.

Mr Larnach is an adept at hustings business. It would require a very smart man indeed to beat him at repartee. After his defeat on Monday at the Harbor Board election, by Captain Scott, Mr Larnach came forward at the declaration of the poll, and in the course of his speech the following took place :

Mr Larnacli said he had no wish to be a member of the Harbor Board, and so far ho was glad of the result ; but his forefathers came from North Britain, and as a North Briton be did not like to be “ licked.” — (Laughter.) He could take his licking like a man, and ho could always “ shut up ” anyone like the man interrupting

him in front in a very short time.— (Laughter.) When “ licked ” he could always “come up to the scratch” again. —(A voice—“ Yes, and get ‘licked’ again.”) That might be, but in this matter he had never worked. He could assure them of that, because he knew ho could have won it, if he had taken any trouble or gone to any expense. But ho did not, because he felt the matter was in their hands entirely, A voice : Well, we have chosen the best man, anyhow. Mr Larnach hoped so, but judging by the speaker’s physiognomy he would not have supposed so.—(Laughter) To judge of his opponent’s supporters by , the physiognomy before him, would he paying Captain Scott a very poor compliment.—(Laughter.)
