THE ANGLICAN SYNOD.

The Synod to-day disposed of a number of small matters of no great interest, and then had a lengthy discussion on the proposal of the Trustees of St John’s College, Auckland, to sell part of the Taranaki endowment. The debate was interrupted by the 6 o’clock adjournment. Permission to bring in a Bill to extend the right of voting at parish meetings to female communicants was, on division, refused. A motion
has been tabled by the Dean of Christchurch, condemning marriages with a deceased wife’s sister.
A debate on religious education occupied the greater part of the evening sitting, and was of a very warm character. The Bishop of Nelson denounced Catholic schools, as giving teaching subversive of both civil and religious liberty, in setting the head of their Church and his commands over the Queen and her laws. The petition as finally adopted prays —(1) for grants to denominational schools; (2) for the right of the clergy to enter schools to give religious instruction to children there of their own communion ; (3) for a local option clause, empowering each Committee to order specified portions of Scripture to be used at the option of the local Committee,
